First Grade Notes--Week of May 31, 2011

This week, school items will be coming home for good.

Thursday will be our school's Field Day. The Chicago Bulls may not be "seeing red" anymore, but the first graders will be on Thursday--first graders are to wear a red shirt (of any kind) with shorts for play at the park, along with gym shoes. No lunch need be brought--we will have McDonald's lunch, provided by Parent Forum. If you have not already brought in your child's completed permission slip for Field Day (was in the Friday folder), please return this slip as soon as possible. Don't forget the sunscreen and hat!

Wednesday--school uniforms as usual--school as usual.

Friday (Last Day of School)--students are in school uniform, and they will attend Mass and receive their report cards. Dismissal will be at 10:00.

We cannot believe that the school year is coming to a close! Where did the time go??? We enjoyed having your child on our classes--we will miss them over the summer! We look forward to seeing them around when they are in second grade and hope they'll give us a smile and wave in the hall! We sincerely thank you for your support all year and wish you a happy, healthy, restful and safe summer!!

First Grade Notes--Week of May 23, 2011

This week's spelling words: find, mind, mild, cold, fold, most, soon, new, boy, building, again, know.

New high-frequency words: any, front, nothing, ready, sorry.

This week's robust vocabulary: seized, tiresome, tremendous, exhausted, outrageous, patient.

This week will be the final week of timed tests. Please be sure that your child practices his/her addition and subtraction facts over the summer in order to keep his/her learning fresh. When the students begin second grade, they will begin adding and subtracting facts to 20.

Thursday, May 19th & Friday, May 20th: Students will be out of uniform and are to wear the following. First graders are to wear short sleeved shirts with long pants and bring along scarves, hats, and mittens.

This week's high-frequency words: boy, building, tomorrow, towards, welcoming.

This week's robust words: wriggle, prickly, interested, cooperative, construct, assist.

Reminder: on Friday, dismissal will be at 12:00 p.m. (early dismissal day--Teacher Inservice in the afternoon).

First Grade Notes--Week of May 9, 2011

We hope all of the moms had a great day!

This week's spelling words: funny, happy, story, stories, hurry, hurried, how, out, baby, done, any, pretty.

This week's high-frequency words: able, almost, blue, great, poured, traveled, took.

This week's robust words: arrived, familiar, properly, anticipate, numerous, vibrant.

We will also work on story details (the "who", "what", "when" and "where" in a story), verbs and changing the "y" to an "i" before adding -es, -ed, -er and -est.

For the remainder of the month, we will work on addition and subtraction (fact to 20 and adding & subtracting 2-digit numbers without regrouping).

Our field trip to the zoo will be on Thursday (barring severe weather). A note with details was in the Friday folder, so please read that carefully to know what to do on Thursday, and again, please be sure that your child is dressed for the weather that is to be on that day.

First Grade Notes--Week of April 18, 2011

This week, we will have 12 spelling review words for the test on Wednesday. The words are: they, there, were, what, went, when, want, from, could, don't, does and said. Since the week is short, there will be no challenge words.

We will review high frequency words, robust words and other reading elements.

If you haven't already, please send the Fruit of the Holy Spirit paper by Wednesday.

Reminder: there will be no school on Thursday, April 21 (Holy Thursday); Friday, April 22 (Good Friday); or Monday, April 25 (Easter Monday). We wish you a blessed Easter!

First Grade Notes--Week of April 4, 2011

WELCOME BACK!! Hope you enjoyed the week off!

New spelling words: ice, nice, race, page, edge, large, home, those, hello, love, there, two. Challenge words will be on the practice list, given out on Monday.

New high-frequency words: become, busy, eyes, high, listen, remembered, visitor, talk.

This week's robust vocabulary: pleased, joy, stammered, puzzling, probing, unrelenting.

We are beginning a math unit about geometry (solid shapes such as sphere, cube, pyramid, cylinder, rectangular prism and cone); plane shapes (square, rectangle, triangle, circle); faces on a solid shape; sides and corners on a plane shape; following directions; positional words.

Please return your child's completed Book-It calendar this week. Pizza tickets will be given out shortly.

A book report will be due on Monday, April 11.

Advent Preparation

We are currently in the season of Advent. To prepare for Christmas, the first graders (along with our kindergarten neighbors) participate in weekly Advent prayer services. We gather to sing the echo song, "Waiting by the Window." We listen to short Bible stories as we light a candle on the Advent wreath. We await the arrival of Jesus on Christmas Day.

First Grade Makes Christmas Cards for Soldiers

Last week, the first graders of St. Joseph School created beautiful Christmas cards for soldiers who are serving abroad. We used colorful stamps and stickers and the cards looked lovely! We discussed the important role that soldiers have and many of us mentioned loved ones who have or are currently serving in our armed forces. We thank God for them and sent them our love and prayers.
